MOSMAN HOUSE
The transformation of Mosman House has been a breath of fresh air, creating a light, bright coastal residence that will be comfortable for years to come.
The clients began the project needing to improve the structure and waterproofing of their house and took the opportunity to create a home that reflected their lifestyle and tastes. Focusing on beauty and functionality, we improved the layout and light and designed purposeful spaces with better connections and flow to outside. A calm, natural palette brings a tailored, holistic aesthetic to the spacious, light-filled rooms. Coastal and nautical references are a nod to the clients who are keen sailors and ocean-lovers.
On the upper level, the kitchen, dining and sitting room is a large open room with strong focal points: a monumental marble kitchen island; a custom-designed scalloped fireplace; and a wool installation by Jacqui Fink. A new double-height void connecting the upper and middle levels filters light downstairs. A porthole window offers an intriguing sightline into the kitchen from the hallway and stair.
Changing the direction of the staircases created more logical connections between levels. Each has a folded aged-brass handrail with soft lighting integrated into its wave-like form. Internalising the downstairs balcony enlarged the bedrooms, and new full-width bi-fold doors open the family room to the pool terrace. The bathrooms and powder rooms are crafted and tactile. Rock has been excavated internally from the basement to accommodate a gym, storage and cellar, with a glass-backdrop window showcasing the stunning sandstone wall.
“We love the ambience achieved by the attention to detail – the bronze handrails, curved ceilings, spectacular lighting, porthole windows and cut-out on the stairs, marble island bench and the handmade Moroccan tiles. We also love the cellar with its glass window that showcases the wonderful Sydney sandstone wall – it has become a favourite place to entertain!”
