SOUTH COOGEE HOUSE
This new house in a beach side suburb of Sydney required clever planning to maximise the views and awkward corner site, while maintaining privacy.
Beginning life as a red brick semidetached two-bedroom home, we took on a previously approved development application and made modifications to satisfy the client’s brief. The old semi was then demolished to make way for a new building.
The house has a strong modernist tone inside and out. The street elevation is a simple silhouette of straight lines with deliberate dips and curves, and this language carries throughout. The teak clad upper floor, balcony and eave fascia read like a warm hat atop the stark white body of the building - it was important to layer these elements using relief and different materials to minimise the bulk of the three-storey facade
Crafted to blend seamlessly with its coastal setting, South Coogee House combines the optimism of Palm Springs modernism with the practicality required for everyday living.
